  • Training University Leaders and Managers – Why and How?

    Nadine Burquel

European higher education institutions are operating in a highly competitive environment, which requires different institutional responses to “face the challenges” this presents. There is growing competition for students and staff, to attract funding and to assume a strong strategic position in the market. Such major changes mean training current and future leaders and managers to new leadership and management styles. Yet in Europe, the demand and supply of higher education management programmes present a highly fragmented picture. The MODERN European higher education modernisation platform was set up as a European-wide instrument to address this fragmentation.

  • Training and Professional Development for Leadership and Management

    Robin Middlehurst

The article explores the range of training and development opportunities now available in different countries to support effective leadership and management in higher education. The ‘modernisation’ agenda for higher education is often the context for national and institutional initiatives; however, different cultural traditions of governance exist and concepts of leadership and management as applied to higher education are often contested. Different types of development for different audiences are presented with examples from different countries before examining how development programmes can be evaluated and their impact assessed in different ways. The article concludes by proposing an integrated model of leadership and management development.

  • Higher Education Management – Change of Professional Roles in a Diversifying Work Force

    Sigrun Nickel

This article is based on the results of an empirical study which reveals that careers within European higher education management are still mostly the result of coincidence. Nonetheless, this coincidental process has brought about a dynamic labour market. The article shows that higher education management is a heterogeneous occupational field with high growth potential. Against this background, higher education institutions are required to professionalise themselves as employers and to create improved staff policies. This will help counter current scepticism especially from the academic side regarding higher education management, and allow for better integration of academia and administration. In order to support this development, the article provides ideas drawn from examples of international good practice in Europe, USA and Australia.

  • Training in Professional Development and Capacity Building

Vuokko Kohtamäki, Seppo Hölttä, Ronald Bisaso

This article discusses individual and organisational rationales for professional development in current rapidly changing environments. The Finnish Study Programme in Administration and Management of Higher Education (KOHA) is designed to address these needs. The article describes how this particular Finnish training programme is implemented in Finland and “migrated” to the Ugandan context as part of a capacity building process.
